MIT officer killed in late night shooting



      An MIT police officer was shot multiple times and died from his injuries late Thursday evening, the Middlesex County District Attorney's office confirmed. The shooting happened around 10:45 pm near Building 32 (Stata), which is currently surrounded by responding agencies.

      The area is cordoned off. According to the District Attorney's office, the MIT campus police officer was responding to a report of a disturbance in the area of Vassar and Main streets was reportedly shot. According to authorities, the officer was found evidencing multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased. State Police said they were assisting in the search for a suspect or suspects, processing the crime scene, and providing investigative support.

      According to the University's website, "12:28am Update on shooter situation. Responding agencies are actively investigating the situation, which remains very fluid at this time. Police continue to sweep the campus. Stay indoors and remain inside until further notice." Boston University issued a campus alert to students on its website. "The unknown suspect is currently at large.

    Please stay away from the [MIT] area and remain indoors. Boston University Police are on patrol within the BU campus." Harvard had an alert posted on its website, but only cautioned students to avoid the area around the MIT campus.
